Rugged Mobile Printers for Field, Warehouse and Retail Applications

A mobile rugged printer is an ideal tool in demanding environments such as industrial, retail and field operations, for recording/printing inventory receipts, invoices and labels. A well designed rugged mobile printer should be easy to mount in a vehicle, on a belt or on a shoulder strap. It should also be weather and temperature resistant, fast and simple to use, and economical. Mobile rugged printers can be either a stand-alone or compatible with a PC and other mobile devices. This article focuses on 4-inch rugged mobile printers, most of which can print 2-inch to 4-inch output.

Repair estimates, work orders, maintenance and service reports, and chemical data sheets are just a few uses for rugged mobile printers. Industries that can benefit from this technology include, but are not limited to, HVAC, home repair, equipment repair, IT services, utilities, pest management and even law enforcement.

Brother Mobile Solutions™ recently introduced RuggedJet™ to their line of rugged mobile printers. This rugged mobile printer can be used for a wide range of printing applications for field service personnel with output sizes from two to four inches.

The Point of Sale News

Effective customer engagement at the point-of-sale/service can now require a mix of technologies to address emerging customer expectations in retail and hospitality applications. Specifically, mobility and self-service solutions are now important considerations, alongside traditional point-of-sale systems.

By carefully evaluating these options and implementing the right processes and solutions, companies can give consumers more information and accelerate transactions, which enhances buyers' perceptions of the purchasing experience. This, in turn, strengthens customer loyalty and introduces incremental revenue opportunities, ratcheting up the return on investment for those deploying the technology. It is critical for solution providers to be able to address these evolving needs to help their customers target real business needs, enabling them to stay competitive and not fall behind in an increasingly competitive business climate.

Seiko Instruments currently offers various thermal printers to address these evolving requirements, including advanced point-of-sale receipt printers, mobile printers and kiosk printers.

Qaliber Receipt Printers

Seiko Instruments' newly introduced Qaliber RP-E series receipt printers are engineered to achieve a new standard for single station thermal receipt printers. These models offer industry-leading performance in the smallest available footprint, with an innovative cube form factor, designed to simplify integration and improve reliability.

At up to 1.15 feet per second print speed, Qaliber RP-E series printers accelerate transactions. This industry-leading performance also enables users to add coupons and loyalty program information, helping secure incremental revenue for users.

Real estate at the point-of-sale is at a premium. With the smallest footprint available in a single station peripheral (5.08-inch cube), Qaliber printers free up critical real estate, while still supporting standard-sized POS receipt paper rolls.

Qaliber printers are also available in standard and front-access control configurations, giving users the option to slide a printer under the counter. This provides needed flexibility and helps simplify the integration process.

Minimum service life ratings of 93 miles of printing and 2 million cuts ensure exceptional reliability, ideal for high volume receipt printing applications.

What Is a POS Printer?

Makes and Models

The types of point-of-sale printers include dot matrix, thermal and ink jet, some of which use receipt paper available at major office supply stores. Other POS printers don't rely on printer ink of any kind, but instead use thermal-sensitive paper to print the characters on the paper. A few of the primary makers of POS printers include Epson, Star, Ithaca, Citizen and Bixolon.
Function

POS systems can print more than receipts, including customer contracts, survey invitations and sales summaries. BarcodeDiscount.com lists three major categories--retail, restaurant and banking--that use POS hardware and software systems. Generally, the point-of-sale printer uses a designated cable to send an "open" signal to the cash drawer.
Accessories

The POS printer--usually part of a larger point-of-sale system--may come with a bar code scanner. Some models also have a check slip for reading and processing payments made by check. Other POS system features include age verifiers, checkout scales, and signature capture screens.

The competitive print speeds are coupled with class-leading reliability, so users can be assured of the ongoing dependability of the product, allowing them to confidently serve customers. The OKIPOS 412 also has a long life print head for added peace of mind.

The OKIPOS 411 and OKIPOS 412 have been designed with the user in mind, with easy paper loading and patented automatic paper feed, allowing the user to simply drop in the paper roll and start printing. Broken Point of Sale Receipt Printers – Repair or Replace?

Prices of computer hardware continue to drop and increase in features and functions. This is to the advantage of the consumer. However, many consumers do not take full advantage of this situation.

Point of sale equipment that is computer based follows this pattern of drops in price and increase in features. An entire industry flourishes behind a cloak of mystery regarding point of sale hardware, software and systems. In large part, business owners continue to pour money into the pockets of dealers who continue to overcharge for repair and replacement parts, including printers.

POS Printer Repair – What you get

Let’s take a look at what most people do with a broken printer. They will attempt to repair the printer through their local dealer.

A call is placed to the dealer who will ask questions of the business owner to determine if the printer is truly broken or if the problem could be a software, cable or power issue. Yes, there are truly repair calls that are solved by properly plugging the printer power supply into the electrical outlet.

If the printer is determined to be broken a technician will come to pick it up. If there is a prior agreement with the dealer a temporary loaner printer may be substituted while the repairs are done.

Many dealers have now gone to a flat-fee for printer repairs. They will charge this fee plus parts to repair the printer. Parts are charged at full list price and will range as high as $125 – $150. Charges higher than that are generally not charged as they exceed the cost of a new printer.

In total, the charge to repair a POS printer should never exceed $300 as you could get a new printer for that amount. However, a repaired printer will not carry forward the full warranty like a new printer will. You will probably only have a 30 – 90 day warranty on the repairs. That means if this same printer goes down again in 91 days you are going to have to do this all over again.

POS Printer Replacement – What you get if a dealer does it

Replacing a POS printer is much simpler and quicker than repairing. This is largely due to the fact that most dealers do not repair the printer themselves. They actually send the printer to a repair depot to be serviced remotely and then returned. This repair process can take weeks and in the worst cases a month or more.

Replacement printers are often kept in stock by local dealers. If not, they can obtain a replacement printer from one of their vendors in a day or two. However, be prepared to pay full price with a dealer margin in excess of 40%. This could easily drive the replacement cost of a POS printer to the $500 mark.

At least with a new replacement printer you will start the clock on a new warranty period. The problem with this is how much of this new warranty is passed to you by the dealer. I am sorry to say that a great many dealers will pass 1 year of the 3 years of warranty offered by the manufacturer.

New point-of-sale printers more energy efficient

Global imaging and printing company Epson reports that its latest generation point-of-sale (POS) printers are able to reduce power consumption by up to 85%, compared with predecessor products.

Certified by energy efficiency standard Energy Star, the receipt printers offer a low stand-by power consumption of less than one watt. This equates to a significant decrease in energy costs considering that POS printers are on stand-by for most of the day.

Meanwhile, new technologies used in Epson products reduce paper consumption when printing receipts by scaling down receipt length by up to 30%. This is achieved without influencing the readability or the paper width. With an average receipt length of 20 cm, this saving equates to around 6 cm of paper for each receipt.

Epson South Africa GM Kelvin Reynolds says with the cost of energy and operational resources continuing to rise, identifying ways in which Epson can help its customers to save money is becoming increasingly important. “Energy and paper reductions are tangible solutions that can be delivered through our products, which can lead to significant financial gains for the retailer, not to mention the support both of these factors provide in helping retailers become more eco-conscious,” he notes.

Average reductions amount to an estimated R2 400 for each printer over five years, and over 144 kg of saved paper. Translated to a fleet of 1 000 printers, these reductions deliver cost savings of up to R2.4-million.

Meanwhile, the company reports that the introduction of new intelligent printers support retail ambitions to deploy cloud-based information technology (IT) systems.

The Espon TM-T88V-i and TM-T70-i have been developed using Epson’s new ePOS print technology. This technology enables users to print receipts, tickets and coupons at the point of sale, as well as in back office and kitchen environments, directly from tablets and other mobile devices. This can be done using any Web browser that supports hypertext mark-up language, or HTML, 5, without the need for personal computers, servers or drivers.

Ideally suited to hospitality environments, such as restaurants and bars, in which tabled devices are used for taking and communicating orders, these solutions help improve the costumer experience and order accuracy. It can also be used in retail stores using mobile devices to cut down on queuing times at the till point, as well as other businesses looking to move POS IT to an open architecture system, in order to streamline processes and simplify IT management.

Reynolds notes that consumers have changed over the years. “At first, the retailers were in control of consumers, but with the introduction of more advanced technology, consumers are now in charge of retailers. Consumers have also become fussier and want the feeling of personalisation when doing grocery shopping or ‘fun’ shopping. Epson is aligning its tech- nology with this trend,” he notes.

The machines are able to work on a network connection and work with most operating platforms, including iOs, Android and Windows. By introducing the functionality for these printers to communicate through the cloud, Epson is able to help retailers reduce upfront investment costs.
